MIMA
A vanguard artist and pillar in the Puerto Rican alt-music scene, Mima represents both the struggle and viability of the independent musician in Puerto Rico navigating a new kind of Caribbean landscape. Her unique sound is a poetic synthesis of Caribbean rhythms, North American soul, and southern psychedelia that skillfully weaves the romanticism of traditional folk and Afro-Caribbean sounds with a DIY and post-punk approach.

MIMA:
A vanguard artist and pillar in the Puerto Rican alt-music scene, Mima (also known as Yarimir Caban Reyes) represents both the struggle and viability of the independent musician in Puerto Rico navigating a new kind of Caribbean landscape. She forges a poetic synthesis of Caribbean rhythms, North American soul, and southern psychedelia that skillfully weaves the romanticism of traditional folk and Afro-Caribbean sounds with a DIY and post-punk approach. It all has a familiar quality, like something that’s been with you for years, but the way it’s delivered is so rare and honest that you know you’ve never heard anything like it before.
Her groundbreaking self-titled debut album was released in 2005 and has crept into quite a few iTunes libraries. In 2011, Mima teamed up with African American instrumentalist/producer, Mark Underwood (aka DJ Nature), to offer up a dark and powerful follow-up titled “El Pozo.” The album is a supersonic road trip, timelessly rooted in Latin American tradition, and combining magical storytelling with expert musicianship to create a shockingly expressive musical narrative.
Mima has sold out concerts both in and out of Puerto Rico, and now, she brings her skillfully crafted sound to SOB’s on Friday, May 17!

D’MARQUESINA:
“The duo behind D’Marquesina recall the fiestas of their childhood in Puerto Rico, when there was no where else to throw a birthday party but in the garaje. What started off as an art concept in their private studios, has become an exploration of music of different genres, eras, English, Spanish, you name it, they play it.” via Remezcla.com
